Interests in Obesity Surgery:

  • Started obesity surgery in the first year (1976) of training in the department of Dr. Ceulemans, who was the 1st in Belgium to perform bariatric surgery (1st procedure in 1970). At that time the Intestinal Bypass  following Payne & Dewind was the procedure of choice. This procedure is performed till the beginning of 1983.
  • Started the Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD) following Scopinaro after the 1st International Symposium on Obesity Surgery in Genoa, Italy, September 1983. Since then more than 2.000 of these procedures are performed, 350 of these by laparoscopy.
  • Since 2002 the Gastric Bypass is performed by laparoscopy on a regular base.
  • The Gastric Banding is also performed.
  • The sleeve gastrectomy is also performed in well selected cases




Papers on BPD and GASTRIC BYPASS  are presented on most of the International Symposia and congresses of the IFSO with different topics: personal series, BPD as a redo for failed restrictive bariatric procedures, redo surgery after complications or side effects of BPD, and others.

  • Founding member (1996) of the Benelux Association of Bariatric Surgeons (BABS) Treasurer of the BABS.
  • Founding member (2006) of the Section for Obesity Surgery Belgium (SOSB)
  • Treasurer of the SOSB
  • Board Member of the Internationals Federation for the Surgery of  Obesity (IFSO)
  • President (2008 - 2010) of the European Chapter of  IFSO
  • Member of the Royal Belgian Society for Surgery
  • Member of the Belgian Group for Endoscopic Surgery (BGES)
